First thought: Have you formatted your card (in the camera)? I have a Canon camera and format any new SD card in the camera before use and I've never had a problem being able to open or copy the pictures or video on any Mac.
And the second thought: Have you checked to see if that reader is compatible with your camera, the card, and/or the Mac? I just did a cursory search on the IOGear site and found one comparison list which only shows two models (GFR280 and GFR202SD) as being compatible with Canon cameras.
