I also was frustrated by installing Lion and finding out CAC readers aren't supported. You DO NOT need to downgrade to 10.6. In these forums I found my way to www.militarycac.com. It will tell you how to make it work. I followed option 1. I downloaded the 2 files placed them in the stated location and presto chang-o I have my CAC reader working on Lion now. I also ordered a small portable CAC reader that's really slick which I just got in the mail today. Tested and it works for accessing email, online training sites, mypay, and everything else I tried. The only thing I can't figure out is DTS which I think is only a windows based signature system. The apple store sells the card reader for $33 including shipping (search for CAC reader) but I found the identical item on ebay for $21.75 including shipping.

There is an opensource software called 'Smart Card Manager' which is referenced on militarycac.com as an alternative to using ActivClient 6.2 (AKA for those of us that can't access a CAC secured site to download a program designed to enable the use of a CAC card needed for said site).

Finally, make sure (if you're military) that you have all of the appropriate DoD PKI Root Certificates installed and have uninstalled old/conflicting certificates. It's taken me a lot of digging to find this solution and I've done a lot of the working with solutions from militarycac.com in the past and it seems every time windows changes, something about smartcard login on government sites breaks.
